As a Licensed Body Mapping Educator, Melanie works with musicians to help prevent and recover from injury-producing movement and to maximize performance potential through the innovative technique of Body Mapping. She has given full-day workshops for the Arrowhead Music Teachers Association and the Chippewa Valley Music Teachers Association, as well as many customized/targeted workshops for varying groups including a Suzuki parent group and college technique courses. Many musicians have found private sessions to be immensely helpful as well.
Melanie conducts the DS Concert Orchestra through the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra’s youth orchestras program, and is founder and director of the 20+ member community flute ensemble, North Wind Flute Choir.
As an active freelance musician, Melanie is a frequent principal sub for the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and teaches flute at the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS) and in her private studio. She played with Northern Lights Music Festival in 2013 and 2014, and has performed with the United States Marine Corps Bands. Recent solo performances include guest soloist with UWS wind ensemble and orchestra, recitals for the University Recital Series at UWS, and the Music of Grace recital series at Grace Lutheran Church in Hermantown. Her Latin American Duo with bassist and Columbian native, Nixon Bustos, performs educational and entertaining outreach concerts in schools, libraries, community centers, and private events.
Melanie was a judge for the inaugural UMFA Young Artists Competition in St. Paul, MN, and has over 30 years of private teaching experience. She has also worked on staff for flute clinics, public school programs, and summer camps, including the Northland Youth Music Program in Superior, Wisconsin, the North Shore Summer Music Experience at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and as a Minnesota All-State Band section coach.
